<text>
Legends are born with the passing of the years and the Metzeler Classics calendar has by now earned the right to be one of the most sought after mementos in the two-wheeler world. An exclusive work made even more valuable by its production in a limited series, it provides only a fortunate few with the privilege of hanging a copy of this calendar on their walls. The ingredients of this year's Metzeler calendar are unforgettable moments in motorcycling from the sixties and slices of history which have dictated the success of Japanese motorcycle manufacturers throughout the decades.

In fact, since 2010, alongside the Metzeler Classics calendar, with its fascinating black & white images of the golden years of motorcycling, Metzeler has selected snapshots which are connected by a theme particularly dear to the brand. This is why, after having dedicated the 2010 calendar to the Moto Club Classic Cuba (MOCLA) and the 2011 edition to the historic Café Racer movement, Metzeler decided to entitle the 2012 edition ''Homage to Japan'', dedicating it to Japan and Japanese manufacturers. The history of Japanese motorcycle manufacturers began in the fifties when, after the Second World War, Japan noticed the growing popularity of motorcycles in Europe and the United States, and began to manufacture its own bikes for the domestic and international market. Since then Japanese motorcycles have proposed increasingly innovative and technologically advanced solutions, contributing significantly to the development and progress of the two-wheeled world.

''An important part of international motorcycling history'' said Francesco Pietrangeli, Marketing Director of the German brand, ''has been written by Japanese bikes. This is why it seemed only right to honor them and the entire Japanese population at this particular moment, after the great disaster which struck them so fiercely this year - a disaster to which they have reacted in an exemplary way''.

Originally launched in 1994 as a special edition of the cult calendar Classic Moments, the Metzeler Classics calendar quickly became popular, winning over a faithful following of enthusiasts thanks to its precious snapshots from the street and off-road motor sport world, in which Metzeler has raced and been successful over the years.

The 50 x 53 centimeter calendar is made by Text & Technik Verlag in Weissach, just outside of Stuttgart - the same company that designed the very first Classics calendar in 1994. It is professionally printed on extremely high-quality paper using a five color printing process and an additional opaque finish, while both covers are printed on glossy coated paper. The 2012 calendar features 22 subjects, is printed front and back and provides a bilingual description of each photograph in English and German. The 2012 edition is limited to just 6,000 copies for the entire world.

Metzeler Six Days Extreme wins the Enduro World Championship in E3 class with Mike Ahola, in Juniors category with Jérémy Joly and in Women's class with Ludivine Puy

In the last race of the Enduro World Championship (EWC) which was held in Mende, France, Metzeler earned another World Championship with riders
Mika Ahola
(Honda-HM) who triumphed in
E3
class,
Jérémy Joly
(HM-Honda) in the Juniors category and
Ludivine Puy
(Gas Gas) in the
Women's
category.

Finnish rider Mika Ahola (HM-Honda team) earned his championship on Metzeler's Six Days Extreme tire and was crowned in France after a fantastic season including nine wins and six podiums in total. Ahola has closed the Championship with 369 points, 57 more than his direct opponent, Frenchman Christophe Nambotin (Gas Gas), always on Six Days Extreme. This past weekend, Mika Ahola won both races ahead of Alex Salvini (Husqvarna) and Marko Tarkkala (Husaberg) on Saturday and Sunday.

Ahola's victory will be remembered in the history of the Enduro World Championships as he is the first rider to have won a title in each class.

The championship weekend has given great satisfaction to Metzeler, not only due to Ahola's brilliant performance, but due to wins in the other two categories of EWC. In fact, in the EW class reserved for women, French rider Ludivine Puy (Gas Gas team) was equipped with Metzeler Six Days Extreme for her second year in the world circuit, and won six out of six racers, closing the world championship ahead of Laia Sanz (HM-Honda) and Blandine Dufrene (Gas Gas), obtaining her second consecutive World Title. Metzeler Six Days Extreme tires also triumphed in the Junior class where Jérémy Joly (HM-Honda team), a young Frenchman, won the team title.

The French weekend has delivered a total of three wins for Metzeler (two with Mika Ahola and one with Rodrig Thain), two second places (Eero Remes and Cristobal Guerrero) and three third places (Cristobal Guerrero, Eero Remes and Ivan Cervantes).

In addition to the successes of the three World Champions in 2011, the Metzeler Six Days Extreme found success in the two remaining classes of the Enduro World Championship: in the E1 class where Finn Eero Remes (KTM) took second place in the overall standings and in the E2 category where Spaniard Cristobal Guerrero (KTM) won the title of vice-champion of the world.
Metzeler Moto took top honors at the 2011 GEICO AMA EnduroCross series, presented by Lucas Oil at X Games 17 in Los Angeles this week. The inaugural X Games EnduroCross proved to be a nail-biter to the end as Taddy Blazusiak (KTM), the series' dominant rider squeaked in to the race thanks to a Last Chance Qualifier performance after failing to qualify the first time out. He then had to push his way past three very strong riders - Kevin Rookstool, Geoff Aaron and Mike Brown - who all valiantly fought to keep their leads in the main event. Blazusiak went from third to first in one section as Aaron went over his bars during his challenge for Brown's second-place spot. Brown also moved past Aaron take over second and held it to the finish.

The battle for the final podium spot ultimately went to Monster Kawasaki's Justin Soule, who had to fight off repeated challenges from Joakim Ljunggren from Sweden. Geoff Aaron recovered for fifth position. Destry Abbott, Kurt Caselli, Cody Webb, Taylor Robert and Kevin Rookstool rounded out the top ten.

"Winning is exactly the result I wanted but it was a seriously tough night," said race-winner Blazusiak. "The main event went really well, and the night started well, but my qualifying race was a disaster and having to ride the LCQ wasn't something I was planning on doing either. I got the second fastest time during the hot laps session, which I was happy with. I made a few mistakes but it went well. I got a great start in my qualifying session then got hit from behind on the first log section, which put me right at the back of the pack. I had a wild couple of laps after that but then got things together and started to put some good lap times together. But I got third and had to go to the LCQ because the qualifying procedure was a little different to normal. That race went well but I got a really bad pick of the gate in the main event. I saw a gap in the first turn of the main and went for it off the start, which moved me up to about fourth or fifth. At the end of the first lap I was third. I felt like I was riding well then and pushed hard. I worked my way into the lead and really enjoyed the second half of the race. The event was awesome, but hard work. Riding the 350cc four-stoke worked out great, I loved it. I have to head back to Poland now, just for a few days, but will soon be back in the States for the second round of EnduroCross."

Blazusiak's KTM was fitted with the Metzeler 6 Days Extreme World Champion Enduro F.I.M. tire which features a new high resistance polyester carcass material and x-ply construction for superior structural characteristics and excellent puncture resistance. The 6 Day Extreme's new 90/90-21 "Hard" front is designed for use in mid-hard to hard-rocky terrain conditions. Its V-shaped tread pattern improves braking performance and stability while its knob distribution and geometry are designed to offer outstanding grip and traction with high resistance both in dry and wet conditions, in soft, loose or hard terrain. New compounds feature special carbon black and polymers to reinforce the knobs and offer improved tear resistance.

"This was a big win for Metzeler," said Chris Wall, Metzeler Moto North America's Director of Marketing. "The X Games EnduroCross is about as extreme an environment as you can get, and our 6 Days Extreme tire has been proven once again to be the right choice for EnduroCross racing."

In the first ever Women's EnduroCross event, KTM backed Maria Forsberg dominated the event and lapped the entire field. Tara Geiger rode her Lucas Oil backed Honda to second place and Kacy Martinez led the early laps and looked comfortable until a crash took her out of the lead.

The EnduroCross series will now head north to Everett, Washington in less than two weeks for its second visit to the region. Last year proved an amazing event at the sold-out Comcast Arena.

Conducted regularly by editorial staff often riding long distances, this year's sport touring tire test found the Roadtec Z8 InteractTM is designed "to make riding easier" and thus earns a top spot.
In their current July/August 2011 double issue, the editorial board of a German motorcycle travel magazine Motorrad & Reisen recently updated their best tire list. The result was extremely positive for Metzeler: the Roadtec Z8 InteractTM stood at the top having earned 3 out of 4 possible top marks. With the mileage (very good), handling (very good), behavior in curves (good) and the wet performance (very good), the Roadtec Z8 has made a solid showing, together with two competing products.

There was no surprise when the Roadtec Z8 InteractTM brought forth the following comments: "With the Metzeler Roadtec Z8 InteractTM, the rider has everything under control. The tire follows its instincts with an incredible blend of precise and effortless handling. The Roadtec Z8 InteractTM is designed to make driving easier, regardless of the bike - for long and safe riding experiences."

• The tire's new contour in combination with a patented tread design improves handling and reduces steering effort significantly, for maximum confidence in all driving situations. An innovative new design: matching the physical profile shape with a tread design inspired by the Greek letter "Pi", functional in that it increases the flexibility of the profile, thus ensuring optimum tyre contact surface area in all conditions.

• The Multi Zone Tension technology (InteractTM technology) of the 0°steel cord gives the "Z8" long-distance performance and stability along with perfect cornering grip.

• A new composition of the silica component and its dispersion at a nano-scale increases the performance and safety levels in all weather conditions.

"Independent comparative tests from touring magazines like Motorrad and Reisen are critical for establishing also the real-world application of our products. The magazine staff and its readers are riding many kilometers" says Francesco Pietrangeli, Director of Marketing for Metzeler Motorcycle Tires, "enough to offer a valid feedback to tire dealers and consumers on the performances of our newest tire, the Roadtec Z8 InteractTM."

Metzeler reinforces this week in Cartagena the performances of its premium Interact™ radial motorcycle tyres, a completely renovated line of tyres whose capabilities satisfy the needs of three motorcycle segments and even further enhance consumer riding styles with a final result of
true riding enjoyment.
The day-long event, termed the
Metzeler Interact™ Challenge
, is an opportunity for press and customers to perceive the benefits granted by Interact™ technology to motorcyclists as
the easy choice
. The new promise of Metzeler is not simply a tyre fitted to your motorcycle; it's a way to achieve pure riding enjoyment and maximum utility from the motorcycle, according to one's individual riding style.

METZELER INTERACT™ CHALLENGE

Motorcyclists' choice of motorcycle is not simply based on a certain bike model's performance statistics or intended riding purpose, but also by its aesthetic preferences. Similar to our choice four-wheeled vehicles, this visual buying choice is influenced heavily by look and feel, followed by a search to increase its performance characteristics, usability, comfort and safety.
Interact™
radial tyre range and its three diverse products cover many different motorcycle segments and are interchangeable (on most bike models, see TDB) for achieving
riding enjoyment
and diverse usage created by the relationship between motorcycle and riding style. Among most impactful aftermarket elements is that of
tyre choice
, whereby motorcyclists can quickly modify the performance characteristics/behaviour of the motorcycle.

Beyond simply its long heritage of quality German engineering, Metzeler has recently focused on integrating a
ready-to-use technology
into each of its products, evident with the extension of a
patented 0° steel belt
and associated Multi Zone Tension technology, with a specific setup inside the
Racetec K3 Interact™,
Sportec M5 Interact™
and the
Roadtec Z8 Interact™
radial tyres to best match the compounds, overall grip, stability and mileage requirements of certain riding styles. Interact™ range provides a riding enjoyment while being comfortable, safe, innovative and functional.

With simplicity of its radial range, Metzeler's three premier products are
the easy choice
for coverage of eight well-defined riding styles/motorcycle usages: Sport, Sport-Urban and Urban-Touring using a sport bike, naked bike or a more touring-oriented bike, with some overlap depending on the trade off of mileage, comfort and safety with that of maximum stability at full lean, grip, and quickness of handling. Although
Racetec K3
sees its strength in the Sport segment with a modern sport bike, new street ready compounds allow its capability to extend to 1000cc naked bikes for a quick steering response in mountain riding. The same concept applies for the
Roadtec Z8
whose fitment on sport touring bikes is common, but when mounted to a modern sport bike, extends the bikes usage to include even long commutes under potentially rainy conditions with safety in the wet and extended mileage.

Working with specific compound elements like
high silica content
for wet grip and using a
nano-scale
dispersion
of the compound allow for a high safety level even in high temperature or load stress. Metzeler Interact™ tyres are
the safe choice
also for their modified structural features like
high-tension steel cord
in the center for high-speed stability and comfort, along with the correct
Greek-Pi
inspired combination of tread grooves for reduction of aquaplaning (M5 and Z8) or slick-like feel (Racetec) at full lean on the track. Furthermore,
Metzeler
is researching the extension of its technologies for a sustainable urban mobility during the colder months provided by scooter and motorcycle usage, resulting in traffic reduction.

The Interact™ tyre range is also
the popular choice
, having had the
Racetec K3 Interact™
chosen already as original equipment fitment on
BMW's S1000RR, Aprilia's RSV4-R
and the Triumph
Speed Triple
in both the 180 and 190 rear tyre sizes, the former of which won the MasterBike test in 2010.
Sportec M5 Interact™
and its 5 zone tension setup is the perfect all-round Supersport tyre, currently fitted to the
BMW F800R
and
Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport,
providing a mix of comfort, mileage and ample grip demanded by the sport enthusiasts of today, some of whom ride event in the poorest of weather conditions. The
Roadtec Z8 Interact™
recently saw its debut on the
R1200R
the much anticipated
K1600 GT
and
GTL
models, a critical choice of the Munich-based manufacturer for bikes ready dedicated to motorcyclist making long trips in comfort under a diversity of weather conditions.

Metzeler demonstrates through this challenging event in Spain involving nearly 50 members of the press, amateur pilots and customers that Interact™ tyres should be
your choice
, since it's
your riding
style
that counts more than the type of motorcycle. All three premium products increase the enjoyment one can get from riding, by riding the way you want and thus making

Metzeler
is one of the world's oldest tire firms and started producing tires for two-wheeled vehicles in 1892. The German firm has always been at the forefront of tire technology and in 1933 become the first to create a tire made from synthetic rubber, which offers better grip and durability than natural rubber, while in the late 1970s the company produced Europe's first tubeless tire to allow riders to fully exploit the new developments in motorcycle handling. After more than 100 years of motorcycle tire development, Metzeler continues to lead the way when it comes to product innovation and the German firm is still dedicated to its core value of supplying riders with outstanding quality tires

A grand celebration to remember with honor, eighty years ago, the victory of Ernst Henne on the mythical "Targa Florio", who accomplished this feat with Metzeler's best. The celebration was a 600km long journey in which riders tackled varying terrain: from the historical circuit to the slopes of Mount Etna, from off-road to the motorway. All of this distance was covered using motorcycles and tires for each and every occasion. We talk about Sportec M3, Roadtec Z6 Interact™, Racetec K3, Tourance EXP, Feelfree WINTEC, 6-Days Extreme and ME 880 Marathon.
